I hate to say it but that simple mistake could be costly, how much did you put into the tank?
Firstly I would remove all of the infected/mixed fuel from the tank and dispose of it safely (no dumping it down the drain or using it to burn as fuel)
Secondly I would change the fuel filters.
then look at some way of potently cleaning the fuel tank and lines etc as it sounds like the wrong fuel got to the engine where it could potentially have done damage.

Usually putting petrol in a diesel car is not as bad as putting diesel in a petrol car(as petrol isfurther up the refining ladder than diesel)however with modern diesel cars as they are more complex than older ones and as such are more sensitive to fuel changes. That yousaid Petrol and notgas and you have an E320CDII would say you are in the UK, where abouts are you?If you are in Sheffield of LeedsI know there areMercedes specialists in both these cities who would be able to help if you are not a good spanner man your self.
Best of luck
James

Hi thanks for replying. I put in about 10 litres. Was a bit of diesel in it, but when it hiccuped I stopped the car. I only drove it for about .3 mile. Everything through to the engline has been flushed incl. the common rail. All filters have been changed too. I think the high pressure pump is probably what will be done too - to preclude damage to the engine.?

Drain the fuel pump, and since you stopped it as soon as you caught the mistake it most likely did not damage the pump from lack of lubrication. You flushed the lines, correct?Prime the car as instructed in the manual or while someone is cranking it over a low pressure air line wrapped in a rag can be put into the filler nozzle and gently inject some air.You should not even have to go to this measure if you did not drive the car to the point of failure due to the tnjection of the gas.
good uck,and glad you caught it.

No prob whatsoever.. did it myself a couple of times. just get rid of the petrol, fill it up and let the engine/pump do the work. the major problem would accure if you`d do it th eother way around, meaning puttin diesel on a petrol car. here in Norway ( europe ) there are different sizes for the diesel and petrol nozzle, so you can fill a diesel car with petrol, but not the other way around- because of the fact that you would wreck a petrol engine with diesel, but not th eother way around. sorry for my lousy language, but hey I`m Norwegian!!
