Default Mercedes model Inscription missing / buying a Mercedes

Hello everybody,
I'm new to the forum.

Tomorow i'm leaving to Germany to buy a Mercedes E Classe 2007, or 2006 ( with facelift ). I saw a lot of cars on the Internet, but half of them don't have the back letters which say the model ( like E 220 CDI ).
The reasons car sellers gave me were :
1) the car was projected for taxi and they would change the color and that's why the text is missing.
2) The owner took them off so that the car could gain a "sport" look.

I personally have a friend which repainted his car, and the guys at the service didn't put the inscription after that ( Ocativa, 1.9 TDI, that's his car ).
I wonder, are all those cars repainted ? Or what's the catch ? I don't think Mercedes forgots putting on the model incriptions.

Thank you very much.
Dan

This is common, and was actually a European factory option. In the States it is called "de-badgeing" often it is because a lower end car owner wants the car to look more prestigious, others with the bigger engine want to look less obvious to thieves, while others just like the cleaner look.
