I have a 1997 E320 with 85000 miles. My question is about automatic transmission. When I start the car and without proper warm up, the first and second gear engage @ higer rpm than normal. Someone from Mercedes told me that this is per design.

But I have also noticed that even after the car is warmed up, rpm drops off aggressively when shifting gears, but the transition between gears is not smooth at all, especially upon acceleration. It almost feels like there is a delayed response. Without rapid acceleration, however, transition is pretty smooth.

I do not know if this is a transmission problem, fuel injection problem, or spark plugs. Before I go off and spend hundreds, I just wanted to know if this problem has been experienced by anyone else, and if so, whether or not they found a solution.
