looking into buying a 300E
As the title says, I'm looking at buying a 300E. I found one on craigslist. Its an 88' with over 267,000 miles, which makes me a little nervous but the asking price is good. The ad says it runs good and the a/c blows cold, which to me are the two most important things. I have a pretty good knowledge of cars, so I'll know the basic things to look for. But are there any 300E specific things I should look out for? How much money should I expect to be spending in maintenince and repairs?
If you are willing to spend some money you could check the compression of the engine. This will tell you a lot about the state the engine is in. As long as you are measuring less than the standard compression you are fine. If you are measuring more than what it should be, that particular cylinder is leaking oil (which increases the compression) and than you better stay away from the car.
If it is an automatic transmission check for any slip when you want to drive away (forward and reverse) from stand still. Repairing a transmission is a costly affair, not something to look forward to.
Once you buy the car simply change all the filters (transmission, fuel, oil, air) and put new oil in the thing.
If it is a Diesel then check whether the fuel pump is leaking fuel. If so, this means they need to take it apart and replace some rubber seals, also costs quite a bit of money.
For the rest I would simply take a good look at all the rubbers, the ball joints, steering, suspension, tires (4 new tires may cost roughly half the value of the car !) etc.
With this many miles this car should not cost more than 1500 euro or 1500 usd, anything more is simply too much.
