Default Letting E320 get too close to empty

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?? The gas light came on in my 1999 E320. We might have driven 10 miles after the light came on. We filled up with Kroger gas (not premium - which we have never used premium - but we have never used Kroger gas either). We drove maybe 2 more miles, stopped, shopped, and the car started. We drove maybe 3 move miles, stopped, ate, came out and the car would not start. It turned over but it no gas was getting through. After trying to start it serveral times, we let it sit for a few minutes and it started up. I noticed right before we stopped to eat the car jerked a little in the parking lot, which has never happened before. Does anyone think we let the gas get too low, or do you think it was the gas we used? Or any other ideas?? Thanks, Stan
