i recently started having a problem on my 2001 E320 4matic. if i drive my car 3 consecutive days, the rpm would rev and then stall out on me. it would not go in reverse either.it makes a loud winding noise while i am driving. i would shut off the car and then restart it. then i can drive it again for a short time. if i dont drive the car for a couple days then it wuld be back to normal. untill the same incident happens again. i had the converter replaced. i am losing my mind,last time i dropped it off to my mechanic he couldnt find a problem. does any one have any ideas what could be happening? please help.

 

IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE THE PLATNETRY GEARS IN THE BOX WHEN THE NOISE COMES DO YOU LOSE POWER AS IN THE CAR STARTS TO SLOW DWN????????

I note you do not give any Service History details. Mileage?

Step 1.Is trans oil level OK? Needs to be checked by the garage.

Step 2. Have any transmission OBD codes been set?

When the converter was changed (for this problem?) what oil was used? MB special or ordinary Dextron etc.

I fear that you will need a trans rebuild. Either the hydraulics are faulty/sticking or the gear selection brake bands must be worn.
