Default E320 Trans Problem

I was rear eneded in my '03 320. It caused a problem with the transmission, the stick shift wouldnt move left or right for the manual driving mode and didnt seem to line up correctly or go completely in gear. Dealer initially said linkages or a bushing might have been the cause.

Now the dealer says its a sensor in the trunk (he said gateway something or another) - im wondering if there is a Sensor in the trunk that would cause a problem like this? Does the dealer' diagnosis sound accurate and complete??

If the gear selector lever won't move left and right (for Tiptronic) the original diagnosis sounds more plausible.

A sensor in the boot can't possibly stop the gear selector lever from moving against spring loded mech.

Can(controller area network) bus gateway module might be in the trunk on an 03 and it is the data comm center for most onboard communications to the trans, locks, alarm, limp mode triggered by the ets abs esp and a slurry of other systems. If you got it in the trunk the can bus link module may have been damaged.
you have insurance?I hope!
