E320 Gear Selection

I have just bought an E320 2000 model but having problem with the gear system. the gear selection system fails and pick again. someone sohuld please tell me what is likely to be the problem.

need more input. fails how? is it stuck in park ? it will not shift will driving

Will react as if it where in nutral while engaged in Drive.
