E230 W210 stalling in reverse
Hi All
I wonder if anybody can help with my strange transmission on my 1996 E230 (W210). When idling and out of gear the engine is fine but when I engage reverse, the engine starts to struggle and often stalls when I accelerate. It sometimes even backfires! This happens a bit when starting in drive but when I'm on the road at speed, everything is fine. When stopping at lights, etc the engine speed sometimes wanders but crawl is OK if I don't touch the accelerator - i.e. when I accelerate, it seems to need more foot pressure before moving and is a bit lumpy. Seems to get a bit better ehen the engine warms up.
I read a post in another forum from somebody who had a similar problem and it turned out to be a faulty trans-modulator. One question I have is whether this part of the transmission is easy to diagnose or even replace to see if it is the root of the problem - or is there something more obvious I should do first? I'm OKish with a spanner but don't have specialist equipment or ramps, etc.
Any help will be gratefully recieved.
Regards
David

it depends what trans you have in that car it may be a type 4 or type six if it is a 722.6 morethan likley you need a new trans there are numborous needle berrings in the trans that come apart and basically gernade the trans. drop your trans pan down ad see if you have metal shavings in it. if you have a type 4 trans you have a problem with your
lb3 assembly. now to figure out which trans you have cause mid production year mb changed trans assemblys you look for a swith on your gear shifter assembly that says W/S this swith says you have a type 6 trans

Hi Vytamenc
Many thanks for your prompt reply. The problem seems a little too complex for me to solve with a spanner and a can of WD40 (as I naively thought it would be!). My plan therefore is to have the problem diagnosed by a professional mechanic tomorrow. I'll let the forum know how I get on.
Again - many thanks - your help is very much appreciated.
