Different size tires front and back????????

When the rear (305/40x18) to front (255/40x18) tire diameter was 1.068, my car would shut down as you described. When I went to a front 275/40x18 the ratio was reduced to 1.035 and no more hassles. So anything under 3.5% difference won't light up your dash.
