Default delayed engagement

Hi all, I have a 2000 e320 with only 40,000 miles, no transmission leaks, the trans when I back up in reverse and put it in drive pauses for a moment as well as when I put it from drive to reverse, delayed engagement I believe it's called. My question is with only 40,000 miles and no leak why would this be an issue, is this common for this year?

Dear mikes66,
Yes this is a common issue with the transmission and its' fluid level. MB would not want us to be able to stop and suddenly engage the tranny into reverse because we might "damage" it. Try having someone stand at the rear of the car at your stopping point and observe when the back-up lights illuminate when you shift into reverse and I will bet that it coincides with the engaging of the gear! And where is that darn transmission dip stick anyway? Oh, it does'nt have one so you can't check the fluid level! Just stop the car completely and be patient that way you don't feel like you will destroy the transmission. Try reading about how one does check the fluid level! Good luck, Bob R

Ohlord,
I would greatly appreciate an e-mail from you in regards to several tech issues. You seem to be quite aware of many tech problems that plague these cars. Thanks in advance, Bob R.
