If you don't have time to purchase the tool mentioned above, I tried the plug change technique in benzworld forum sticky http://www.benzworld.org/forums/atta...e-dscf1861.jpg
. You attach a loop of line around the plug wire cylinder. It worked well for me without damaging the wires. The hazet tool would have been useful in putting the wires back on though.

The long nose pliers may not have the angle that you need to get to the spark plug boot to pull it straight out.
I bought a Husky 4-piece double box wrench from Home Depot for $12. It came with 4 double headed wrenches (8-9mm, 10-11mm, 14-15mm, 17-19mm) then used a bolt cutter ($20) to cut half of the 17mm head. The resulted tool looked and worked much like that famous and expensive Hazet # 2771. If you don't have a bolt cutter, a saw might do the job but it takes longer. I was very careful when cutting the wrench's head. The metal fragment would fly out at random. I positioned the bolt cutter onto the wrench, placed a cloth towel over before I cut so the metal fragment would fly nowhere.

Default i HAVE`THE SPECIAL 17MM BOOT REMOVAL TOOLS

DON'T WASTE TIME USING PLIERS THEY DON'T GET IN THE ANGLES YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE BOOTS.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO REPLACE THE PLUG WIRES.
THE UPPER WIRE ALWAYS GOES TO THE FRONT PLUG ON EACH CYLINDER AND THE LOWER COIL WIRE TO THE REAR PLUG ON THE CYLINDER.
ngk7090 plugs are undert3bucks
5years or 100k miles whichever comes first,so your plugs are due
No anti seize

I dit it. I changed all 16 spark plugs (Bosh Platinium2) and I have to admit, it took me almost 5 hours to do it. It wasn't that bad but it took some time. I believe that second time I could do it in 3 hours. I also changed engine oil Mobil1, oil filter and air filter. All part I got for $115.00. Not bad at all.

Default changing spark plugs

Since it's probably been awhile since they have been changed one of the easiest ways to change them and get another maintenance item looked after try the following. Take the valve covers off and replace the gaskets and while they are off you can get to the plugs a lot easier. You can also look at some hoses while you're at it since they may need updating as well. Took me no time at all.

I've been using anti-seize compound on plugs going into aluminum heads.
What am I missing?

Default You don't need it

anti seize is not needed the plugs are trivalent plated.
You get the wrong torque values if you use it and you run the risk of shorting out the plug electrode.

pm me information on 17mm mercedes boot tool

The laws of Brobdingnag are simple and easy to follow. There is little civil litigation. Murderers are beheaded.

Default replace spark plugs and cables for $909.00!!

I just came from the Mercedes dealer and they told me and gave me a written estimate to replace spark plugs and cables for $909.00. Can someone tell me why this highway robbery by the dealer, if this job is as simple as I see in above posts.
Thanks.

Default Dealers kids

deserve a new pair of shoes!!!!
They are in the business of selling high end cars to high end people, therefore they know those people spend the money and few even ask your question. Second tier owners often fall for the mercedes dealer only creed and they bitch but do it anyway.
You ask the question and learn to do it yourself. It takes a new diy owner about 2-4 hours of easy work if you take your time and follow directions. The plugs that you buy at the local parts store are the same the dealer sells but instead of 3-4 bucks they charge $20 each for 12 plugs your engine requires. Then they book labor at over 100 bucks and charge for way more hours than it takes for a trained mb tech to perform.
Get the 17mm special spark boot tool and a few other tools and a pair of gloves and you can save 800 bucks.
Wait till you need a mass air sensor! costs 160 bucks takes a chimp ten minutes to remove and replace and the dealers have charged up to 9bills to replace.Don't fall for it.
