Default Central Locking Remote

I've an E200 year 1996 and the Central Lock Radio Remote has only one button. The problem is it works intemittently and typically I have to press couple of times before getting it lock or unlock. Furthermore it only work when I target close to the door. I have changed the battery on remote but still doesn't show any recovery. Is there a way I can increase the sensitivity on the receiver side? Where can I locate the receiver in my car? Any suggestion, appreciated!

it's early version which uses only infrared and not radio frequency.

i may say the infrared is getting weak.

Thanks for the suggestion. I believe the receiver located on the rear mirror and the sensitivity cannot be increase. Can I change the remote to radio type and how much would that cost, an estimation?
