Default brake lining message..

Hi I haveanE320 year 2000. I'm getting a message saying something about the "brake liningwear and to take it to the shop." The mechanic said I need to replace the front brakes, rotors andsomethingabout needing to get new sensors so I can get that message removed. He told me I was looking at around $450.00. Does that seem right? And also do I need to get some special sensors to remove the message, or is there another way? Just curious. Thanks.

Hi,
This is normal "consumable" wear of brake pads.

The pads have sensors which need to be replaced once the warning light has been activated. A wire loop that gets cut when it contacts the rotor.

You may/may not need to replace the rotors. You usually have to replace the rotors every two or three times you change the pads. Both the pad and rotor wears. Interestingly the rotors appear to wear more quickly if the car is only used occasionally since the rotor surface rusts and is then cleaned (worn away) by the pads during use.

MB parts are expensive (but the best). Some people support aftermarket non MB parts. No idea about pricing but doesn't seem unreasonable. Careful you don't get charged for MB parts but non MB parts are fitted! get them to show you the MB box complete with hologram etc.

Pad replacement is a DIY job if you are that way inclined.

Thanks Stuart. I think I might buy the parts and try changing them myself. It should be one helluva learning experience. Do you recommend any online site where I can order the parts. Thanks again.

Did your mechanic tell you how thick the rotors measured?

Where do youlive?
Afraid you will have to Google.
I go to the main dealer despite the cost (less discount) since I know the parts will be compatible with OE.
Buy the correct bits, not cheap immitations, and save the money on labour -DIY.

Others will advise non MB parts. They will likely fit but don't complain if they don't for some reason. More likely you will get squeal, fast wear or whatever. The choice is yours.

Stuart.
