Auto box S and E switch problem

The standard and economy switch on my 1990 300E W124 2962cc has stopped working. The gearbox is always in S mode. Ihave checked the switch and it functions OK but I don't know how to continue the fault finding procedure. Any ideas? Thanks. Andy G
