'99 E300 td TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY?
Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and have never owned (but always wanted) a MB. I am in the process of looking and have found a 1999 E300 td that has 280k miles on. It seems to be in a very good shape overall, but won't be able to see it until tomorrow. I know that w123 models are built as tanks and last forever, buy I would like to hear from actual owners how realiable are these W210's and what to look for.
How many miles are too many for these guys and how durable is the tranny. Are there any electrical or known electronic problems etc etc.
I am no stranger to diesel engines, currently own 4 Mack dump trucks and a Dodge Ram with a Cummins engine.
I would truly appreciate all and any input you guys can provide.
Thanks in advance

The engine is solid but the transmission suffered from bad marketing by Mercedes. They were advertized as "filled for life" and as a result most wear out prematurely because of neglect. At 280k though, it was very likely maintained correctly.
Check the front spring perches for any signs of rust.

My wife has an 04 VW beetle with the same crap "filled for life" type transmission but it only has 26K miles so I am yet to service that puppy.
I am glad to hear about the engine and hoping the overall quality of the car makes it worth the shot.
