Default 97 E320 Transmission Dipstick

I read in the manual that the transmission fluid level should only be checked by the dealer and that the dipstick is not consumer friendly. Is this true? If so, is there an aftermarket dipstick that I can use to periodically check the transmission fluid level, or alternatively, is there a way for me to check the fluid level using the current dipstick?

Thanks!

Does your car have a traditional dipstick? My 1999 and 2002 cars do not. I bought the dipstick "tool" (less than $40) so I can service and check fluid levels on the cars.
