97 E300 keyless entry and keys
Greetings,
I'm a longtime 123 diesel guy with my first foray into newer mercs.
My son has just purchased an E300D circa 1997. He found a really nice car and the only real issues involve the keyless entry system.
The locks all operate well with the manual key in the passenger door. The Driver door has the IR sensor damaged and inoperable so we have sealed it from the weather. The electronic locks operate only adequately through the reciever on the mirror.
We only have one key and are aware of the high replacement cost at the dealer-
1- Is there a more economical way to replace the keys or is it dealer only?
2- Is there an electronic chip in the key fob required to start the car?
3- Can we find a locksmith to cut keys only for starting and/or manual door/trunk operation?
4- Can the drivers door electronics be replaced without dealer involvement?
Thanks in advance, Mike (& Jamie)

I have 2 keys for my car but one is a valet key. I say this because a valet key will do what it seems you want it to do. The keys are dealer only so getting one cut isnt something your going to be able to do. However getting a valet key might be a much cheaper option than the standard key. Its worth having a look at anyway
So your answers are like this:
1-Keys are dealer only
2-I dont know for sure
3-No
4-No
I hope this helps!

The peugeot 406 key has a little chip inside which is picked up by a coil around the ignition barrel. A replacement key cost £140 ($200) as it needs to be cut and then programmed by the main dealer. My local key smith sais that a popular trick is to get a second key cut (which has not had the chip coded) which will physically work the locks, then split the working key and remove the chip. You then remove the lower panel below the steering column and tape the chip next to the ignition barrel so the immobiliser is active all of the time but either key will start the car. Obviously the cars security will be lower as you have "bypassed" the immobiliser but you have a second key for £40 instead of £140. I cant be sure if MB use this chip idea but its worth investigating.
New member here and just purchased a 97 E300D couple of weeks ago. According to the MB parts man, on this year you must use the key fob to start the car. It is chipped. The other key available is around 30 but will only allow you to get inside the car. The key fob is 250 from MB and requires your title and DL to order. When the key arrives, you must return with the car for programming.
This is what was told me, hope it helps.
