Default 88 260E 175,000 miles dies...

I have a 1988 260e 180,000 miles. new heads timing chain and have recently replaced fuel filter spark plugs and wires. I also adjusted the air intake or sensor plate or whatever you call it. it was sticking. However when driving after exceleration coming to a stop the car dies but starts right back up. What to do? what could it be it stalls 50 % of the time unless you give it the gas while braking. It doesn't act like it is sputtering it just dies. What could it be?

Check the Voltage Regulator on the back side of the Alternator itshould be black and say Bosh on it held on with two screws. If it is the cause it will cost $30 alot less then an alternator. Does the tachometer needle bounce while decelerating and then just die, then the carwill restarta few min later? Same thing happened to both my 90 260E as well as my 89 300E

not that it may be really similar...but, I had my 88 260E die on me every once in a while, not every time, but it would happen at random...I took it to a shop and they changed my front muffler and retuned my engine controls. Once having those done, its been idleing really well and hasn't died at a stop yet.
good luck

Thanks for the response I will check the voltage regulator tomorrow. Also what do you mean by "return my engine controls"?

THANKS

Anthony

Also one more thing to mention. I also notice he engine when starting cold will surge. It will go from 700 rpm to 1500 rpm then back down 3 or 4 times quickly and will randomly surge in rpm EVERY NOW AND THEN but then will go back to idle or die.

What does that sound like?

My 87' 260E would die after I adjusted the throttle valve plate. I reset the adjustment plate slightly higher than what the manual called for and have not had any stalling problems since. This is a very timely readjustment as the entire assembly has to be removed to drift the pin in the opposite direction. Good cleaning experience though.
