Default 300 E, SD or SDL&Years before 82?

I'm still doing research on the mb I will buy. I was told that regarding the 300e turbo diesel 82-84 are the best years. Now I'm considering going into an sd or sdl. What does anyone think about the larger models? Also are there years before 82 that are worth buying?

The E300 Diesel is a nice car.

IMO: The most durable is 1981 - 1985 300SD W126.120 chassis.

This has the five cylinder diesel, very rare to see one of these fail below 250K miles (even when abused).

With good maintenance durability of 400K + miles is fairly common.
