2006 e350 valve problem

2006 e350 valve problem
The car has a valve that won't close and has no compression in cylinder #5. The mechanic says we have two options: do full valve job or replace entire engine. Any experience with this type of problem or suggestions?

What failed on the valve?
Anyone check damage to cam?
Anyone check other damage to engine?
What happened that one valve failed?Very unusual in that engine,without more being wrong.
