Default 2003 Mercedes e270 Auto Diesel - gearbox issues

I have a 2003 Mercedes e270 Auto Diesel.
Admittedly I have been driving with the “Service Brake! Visit workshop” warning. A garage checked my brakes and they were all fine. Yesterday, having arrived at my destination I tried to change gear into reverse and it wouldn’t physically let me.
After turning the engine off, the gearbox allowed me to put the gear into neutral. Turning the engine back on I was able to select reverse and drive.
This happened for the next two journeys. Finally today the car would not start. The engine was completely unresponsive when I turned the key, yet the dashboard lit up normally. I tried jumping without success.
I then attached a diagnostic tool and cleared stored error codes and the car started. I’ve done a run in it and reverse worked at the end of the journey.
The “Service Brake! Visit Workshop” is still displayed. Is there a sensor in the auto gearbox that might faulty? This would account for the error message and gearbox issues if the car is not sensing the correct gear.
