Default 1997 Mecedes E230 misfire / backfire

I have a 1997 E230, 70,000 miles. Recently I have had a problem with misfire on acceleration. Not hard acceleration, just farily gently bringing the power back on. Usually after almost coming to a stop at a junction etc.

My mechanic has identified the following as not opering within spec and replaced them: air mass meter, lambada sensor, crank sensor, temperature sensor. He has now replaced the engine wiring harness but the problem still has not gone away.

Any ideas?
