1997 E320 starting problem, red & green LED's flash alternately
Hi all
As the title suggests, we have had a problem with our '97 E320 for about 6 months now and just cannot get to the bottom of it. We have baffled Mercedes mechanics/specialists and are completely fed up with the car! Hopefully you can help...
The car cranks over but refuses to start, I would say 1 inabout 250times the car might decide to start and may run for 15 mins+ then die again. Each time the car won't start therear view red & green LED's flash alternately, we have cut the wire from the scorpion alarm system leading to the IFZ with no results. We had the car at Mercedes but the star diagnostic machine would not speak to the car and we have also tried a generic OBDII scanner which also won't speak to it.
I'm not sure if this is related but the remote locking has stopped working now too along with the electric windows, if you can shed any light on any of these problems, it would be greatly appreciated!
Many Thanks
Ben

Was wondering if you got problem sorted, I am having the same problem with an 1997e200 lights flashing but the windows do work. I think the immobiliser does not detect the chip in the key.
a few months ago,I was trying to open the car with the remote key whenthe red and green light started flashing. I was able to open and start the car...but those light were still flashing. I decided to turn the off..and started again but this time usingmy wife's key..the flashing disappered..I later found that my remote battery is almost gone.

I'm having the same problem with my 1996 E320. The Mercedes dealership can not seem to find the problem. I have taken it to their shop several times & left the car there weeks on end so they can start it each day & check the car diagnostics via computer. Only once did the car not start while @ their shop & they replaced what the computer detected a problem with. I drove the car off the dealership & home (about 32 miles) when I got it home I turned it off & when I went to restart it well it wouldn't restart. The shop said they don't know what to tell me. I have never taken it to a another dealership or mechanic nor have I added anything to the car after factory. Did you ever have any luck finding out what was the problem with your '97? I am pretty sure mine has to due with the anti-theft system & immobilizing the car but no one seems to know whats wrong. please reply if you can help!
