Default 1996 E220 Stalling Issue

Hi all,

When I disengage the clutch the car's revs drop very quickly, usually to less than 500. Occasionally the car stalls. The stall is very smooth, the revs just drop to zero and the engine dies, nothing dramatic.

I am building a list of possible causes, and will investigate each possibility in turn. So far I have only two suggestions:

1) faulty EGR valve
2) faulty electrical harness

As 2) is very expensive and beyond my capability to do myself, I would like to start with 1) - the EGR valve. Pardon my ignorance, but does a '96 e220 even have one? If so, where would I find it, and how could I tell if it's faulty?

I don't have access to diagnostic equipment, so I will not be able to have the exhaust gas analysed or hook my car up to a computer.

Regards,
Evan

Hello MR Evan,

Try Engine Tune by yourself by using only a spray can. Threebond super engine conditioner or any other throttle body cleaner products, dont know these things? Try Google it

clean up/spray into your throttle body after a fair warm up (10-15 mins) engine before you spray it in.

If your air filter is clogged, please change them. Its a part why the dirt comes from.

Let us know if it helps Good luck!!

Thanks - I'll give it a go. My air filter is clean, I typically replace it every 10,000km and this one is only 1000km old and looks clean.

I live in Johannesburg, a particularly dusty part of South Africa. We get a very fine dust from our mine dumps that gets into everything. My personal experience with air filters is that they last half as long here as they should.

Whoa!

Didn't know that your living opposite side of the earth, Im on Borneo Island in a country called Brunei Darussalam. Pleasure to make acquaintance.

In that case, Continue as what you feel is right. But from time to time please Engine tune up with Spraying Throttle spray carbon cleaner in ure Merc. That should help your engine tuned to the exactly what it should be.

Let your engine purrrr like a cat!

Nice to meet you!

Before I go dismantling things I shouldn't, please take a look at these pics and tell me if you can see where the EGR valve might be. And though I think I know where the throttle body is, I'd like to actually be sure.
