190E 2 litre stalling

190E 2 litre stalling
i recently purchased a 1990 190E 2 litre fuel injected, and am experiencing an intermittant stalling problem. The problem occurs when the car is at idle or pulling up to traffic lights/intersections etc, and seems to only happen after the car has warmed up a little.

there are no misses, or roughness outside of the stalling problem, the car has been well maintained and runs like new apart from every so often it has this bout of stalling...

the vacum lines are all intact and visually are in good condition, the pipe on the electric air valve for the cold start was cracked at the t where it goes into the rocker cover, and has been replaced, there no other obvious pipes or lines requiring replacement, the electrics all appear to be in good condition, there are no loose wires or plugs and all of the sensors appear to be in fairly good working order from a visual inspection. i have put a can of injector cleaner in with the gas, and the car has been on a couple of long drives (200km each way at highway speeds).

the problem has been attacked on several occasions and seems to go away for a week or two after each "round". on the latest occurance, i began by checking the seal on the atmospheric side of the electric cold start air valve (the rotating air gate moves freely) and having a play with the vacum pipe from that to the inlet manifold, (this was connected at both ends but i pulled off the manifold end and re attached it to be sure) i pulled the enrichening injector power plug and reattached that, all to no avail and then after repeating all of the above a second time i also played with all of the fuses, and mysteriously the stalling had gone.... and the problem was cured.... (while doing all of this i avoided bumping the electrics and other lines on the motor.... )

so feeling rather clever when it stalled today i thought no sweat let me at them fuses....

unfortunatly the cars still stalling and my ego has somewhat deflaited....

PLEASE HELP!!!

RE: 190E 2 litre stalling
Hello .
I have a 1991 190e 1.8i (w201) and i have the same problem also , every once in a while the engine will quietly stall for no apparent reason. The car will start up straight away and won't happen for the rest of the journey.
There is no rought idling , or misfires of any sort , engine runs very clean.
I travel 60 km/h (40 mph) and come to a complete stop , eg stopping at trafic lights and occasionaly it will stall. I have my suspisions on what the problem is, i think it may have to do with the FPR or the OVP. Also on this particular model their is foam on top of the air housing and is now very brittle with a few vibrations this may knock some of this foam into the throttle boddy , then into the injectors, possibly causing intermittent stalling .
I also have checked my vaccum lines they seem to be intact, but thier was an aftermarket cruse controll linked through the vaccum line , i removed this (didnt function anyway) and plugged up the hole.
I have cleaned my throttle body out and ran 1 tank of fuel with an additive . Seemed to do something but i still have the stalling problem. I am going to replace my fuel filter and possibly the OVP. Ill keep ya posted !!

RE: 190E 2 litre stalling
I had a similar problem. From what I have read, 190e's tend to stall for many different reasons. My car ('91 190e 2.3L) would stall on the first few seconds of driving, and after that it had no problems. I read that the CO Adjustment on the MAS is one way to fix this problem. I tried it out, I increased the ratio so that I would be running a little richer. Let the car sit and started it up 9 hours later. Started up fine and did not stall, however, when coming up to a stop light/sign the idle would drop to about 500 rpm and try and stall, but after completely stopping the idle would come back up. I replaced the rotor, and cap, and saw no difference. I replaced the fuel filter next. After a fuel bath, and letting the car sit and cool down, I tried it again. Car ran perfect, the idle never goes below 800. I have been driving for about a week now and it hasn't stalled once.
In otherwords, try changing the fuel filter first, then the CO Adjustment. Do remember though, the CO adjustment is really only a quick fix to a more serious problem (unless you, or the previous owner has messed with it before). I would suggest changing the cap and rotor, checking ignition wires, coil, sensors, all that stuff before messing with the CO.
Hope that helps,
Andrew

coolent that through age the container develops very fine cracks and when the engine gets to reach its proper temp. it will **** out from the cracks onto your spark plugs and will cause it to stall can be repaired very easy arildite fast clean surface first with thinners solved my problem .it was driving me nuts hope this can help you!

You read my mind I was thinking about posible fuel pump I have had several cars come into the shop for shutting down for no reason other then fuel pumps and sometimes relays after they get hot but most have been fuel pumps.
