Default CLK 320 Auto transmission

Hi All,

I have recently purchased an '02 CLK and am loving it! Loving it apart from the fact that today on my way home from work, something strange happened with what I assume must have been the transmission. As I was in traffic leaving Cambridge (England) I applied the brake to come to a stop. Upon doing this I heard a noise (which didn't sound painful but similarly didn't sound anywhere near healthy) and felt the car shaking as I sat. When the car in front moved on with the flow of traffic, I released the brake and the noise continued and the car stayed stationary as opposed to gently becoming kinetic as usual. My heart started racing at the thought of the cost of what may be wrong and then the car jerked forward and pulled away as normal. It seemed as though the car was neither in Neutral or first and was struggling to find either, until it jerked forwards.

Does anybody out there have any experience of this or does anybody know what caused it. I dread the news that the gearbox maybe on its way out but I am not happy driving the car if it's anything less than perfect!

I really appreciate the time you have taken in reading this (if you made it this far) and look forward to any helpful advice.

Kind regards and I hope you all remain well and in good spirits.

O

Obsidian, I've already passed the 110k mile mark on my 320, and my tranny has done this about three times, but is fine.

It has something to do with the car rolling when in Neutral.
Try this, next time it happens, pull over and turn the ignition completely off and wait about about fifteen seconds, then restart and go. It should reset itself. But don't let the car roll in Neutral, and of course if you're not shifting properly in manual, that would be a problem as well.

Its in the owner's manual.

Hi Charles,

Thank you very much for reading and responding to my thread, I really appreciate it. I took the car to work this morning and after about a mile, when I came to a stand still, low and behold it did it again! And yes, true to form again this evening on my way home from work. It would seem that once it has happened, it is fine afterwards. The car has done 82k and has full MB Service History. My father has been investigating on-line through various forums and has found a few other possibilities which include: Throttle body; possibly the ESP; reproggramming the Auto transmission; torque converter and a couple of other more minor possibilities which need further investigation.

Anyway, just thought that I would let you know and once again thank you for your time and interest.

Take care for now,

O

I didn't know it was doing this everyday. I was hoping it was only a minor problem.
