Default Changing Air Filters to K&N Filters

Picked up an 02 clk430 as my daily driver two weeks ago and want to replace the OEM Intake filters with K&N Filters. Anything I need to know about taking off all that plastic covering to get to the filters? Also, I hate the whimpy exhaust. Anyone have suggestions on exhaust options other than Brabus or Remus - heard them both on a 430 over the weekend - not impressed.

Congrats on the 430. I changed my air filters to K&N, all you have to do is pop off the engine cover and replace the old.

Over oiling, has caused some MAF sensr failures, there is a lot of discussion over benefits and damage.

Dump the K&N, and leave well enough alone.
Several arguments against: (1) only prvides any significant benefit at high air flows (i.e. wide-open throttle), if at all.
(2) do you honestly think Mercedes-Benz engineers don't carefully design and specify the proper intake-air filtration, and that you can do a better job at the local parts store?
(3) it's a psychological thing: if you put it on, you will think it's an improvement. Same thing as "a clean car drives better". etc.
(4) these filters let more dirt through; oil and dirt have negative effects on the MAF sensors, and other parts of sophisticated engine management systems.
If you want to K&N, you need a Mustang or Camaro, not a Mercedes-Benz.

Mostly crap info above. Randy's the Chicken Little of K&N filters.

Here is an interesting read on filtration.

Filtration Testing for Amsoil, K&N, Napa, Jackson Racing, Baldwin, and Mazda air filters on a Miata

Is it Gospel - No
Is it common sense - yes
You decide which way to go.

Just my $.02 worth.
