i am having the same problem. i took it to MB they could not duplicate the problem it is going back this week until they find out what it is. mine is stuck when i first start the car i turn it off come back in a fwe minutes and usually it will engage. i don't think it is the shifter, it seems more like a computor error.

i replaced my shifter last year, if thats all that is happening with the auto than i would say it is the shifter. mine was actually desintagarated. my problem this time may just be a faulty ground wire or a module/component connecting the computor to the shifter. it is at MB right now and they still can't figure it out

RE: 02 cl500 stuck in park
seen this a thousand times, same as the 220 s-class, the shifter is a control unit and it fails, when this happens the shifter cannot see the drive authorization from the electronic ignition switch, the shifter is the main antitheft device so it will not come out of park unless it sees the drive autho, keep in mind the car starts so there is drive autho, only way to get it out is with a hammer, once it starts sticking its only a matter of time until it stays there permanently, the car needs a shifter.

This happens to CL model all the time...and if the MB dealer that you brought your car in doesn't know what the hell is wrong with the car, you shouldn't bring to that dealer anymore...seriously, there are so many f***ed up MB dealer out there...and the guy with the hammer advise...he's right, not a lot of people know that trick to get your car temporarily out of park, so you could drive it to the dealer to fix...but i wouldn't use a hammer. A mallet is what it should be.
