I will probably get a 1996 C280 with like 90k miles. And im wondering which parts i should replace right away just so that they dont break larer, I heard that the head gasket is one that should be fixed, anyone know what else? ANd also, is there a manual so that i can do the maintinence myslef? Thanks

 

If it ain't broken don't fix it. Cars are problematical devices, You could replace a dozen parts and you will have a failure of a part unrelated to what you replaced. The only thing I would do is the plugs, at 90K and if they are original they are probably ready to be replaced. I like Bosch Plat 4's myself.

There are no manuals available in the US, however I understand Haynes has one available in the Europe. I wrote to Bentley Publishers about a printing a manual, they responded they had no plans at present to publish one, this was about 18 months ago.

 

wizard is right on all accounts and there should be a cd manual avbl if u call 1-800-for-merc, mine was about a hundred bucks (99c280). it isn't very user friendly, but with patience, it has helped me to save some $$$.
in addition to the plugs, take a look at the fuel filter (just inboard and fwd of the right rear wheel under a plastic cover) and see if the fuel line clamps that attach it are removeable with a screwdriver or socket (it has been replaced). if not, meaning that the clamps are crimped on from the factory and the filter has never been replaced, now may be a good time to replace it. just be prepared for the dealership sticker-shock filter price. There is never a better time for preventative mtc than when u 1st buy the car!

 

Mikedade, I didn't know Mercedes sold a Cd for the W202, I am going to call and investigate about getting one. Thanks for the update
