What is this part?

Hey guys. I have a 1999 C280 with the V6 engine. It started leaking oil pretty badly, it's coming from the top left front of the motor, about 2 inches directly above the idler pulley, just below the oil filter. It's NOT the oil filter. There is a small rectangular cover (about 1" x 2") bolted on there with two torx-style bolts, and a 3rd bolt head in the middle of the rectangle. the oil is leaking between this "cover" and the block. Is this something to do with an oil pressure regulator? Or is it a cam chain tensioner? Something else? It looks pretty easy to get to, both bolts easily accessible, is there any trick to yanking this off and replacing the gasket (or O ring) underneath? I just don't want to pull it off and find myself in a problem, as can sometimes happen.
thanks a bunch for any assistance.
