...two spring mechanisms (*sp?) at the top, inside the trunk, just under the deck? They are covered by two black oval shaped pieces of plastic. There is one on each side of the car. I was thinking my car didn't have fold down rear seats- but does it?

if your car has fold down rear seats it will have a lever handle to pull under the deck lid you will see it when you open trunk.
