W202 lacks power, slight surging
Hi. I'm new here and just thought I would join in the hope of getting some help with a 95 C180 I would like to buy. The problem is the lack of performance - it does 0-62mph in 18 seconds, and its supposed to do it in about 12. On the road it feels very slow, particularly when accelerating from rest up until about 2000rpm when it starts to pick up.
Under full sustained acceleration it SORT OF feels like its surging, but maybe that's just my imagination. It idles smoothly, and the engine never feels like it misfires.
It had a new engine wiring loom fitted a few years ago, and just had a new catalytic converter.
I have owned other Mercedes in the past, but never anything so new, and I'm a bit stuck as to what might cause such a loss of power.
There are no fault codes to give a hint. The car has 150,000km.
Thanks!
Kaydee

RE: W202 lacks power, slight surging
This is one of those cases where it would be easy to say it's the spark plugs, the fuel filter, the this or that......but I think in
your case, it would just be an expensive guessing game to start replacing parts. And I'm sure you don't want to do that.
With no "codes" showing, I think the only way to approach this is to diagnose first and then repair only what's wrong. Might
be worth it to let somebody (dealer or independent) try to nail it down first.

Thank you for your posting. I did a bit of reading up on HFM-Motronic and it seems the actual throttle butterfly is actuated electronically according to load, etc.... Being that this is so, could it be that on account of a blocked fuel filter, the car throttles down to avoid misfiring, etc? Does the system meausure fuel pressure/volume?

Sure seems that filters (fuel/air) and plugs would be worth inspecting. The new filters filter down to about 30 microns and It has been my experience that it doesn't take much to block them up. Plugs could well be a culprit as well. When did the car have a tune up last?Best of luck! Will
