Default Is it the timing?

i have a 2001 c230K with 83000 miles on it. Recently the start ups are very slow and the rpms go from low to high to low just idling. The car then seems to drive incredibly slow (when given gas it feels like its going nowhere) for about 10 minutes the car does this then is fine after that. This has gotten rediculous because of my constant need to speed up to traffic and the car just cant get up to speed fast enough. I was wondering if anyone else had any expierence? I have been told that some c230 have had tranny problems and had to have them rebuilt around 100K.

Default RE: Is it the timing?

The fact that now a car's timing is controlled by the computer in the car, it wouldn't make sense that one minute your timing is fine
and in a few minutes it's not. So, although I'm not smart enough to rule that out entirely, my guess would be that it's not the timing.
If it were a serious timing issue, I don't think it would remedy itself in ten minutes and repeat this process again and again. OK.
Same with the transmission. If the car is sitting still, as you say it is, and the rpm go up and down just idling, it may have nothing to
do with the transmission. Especially if it's fine in a little bit. Either the tranny is good or it's not. I don't know of any issues or not on
your particular car. Most of my advice is just general automotive knowledge from playing with cars over the years, but a lot of things
trigger a likely cause, and the fact that your car only does this for ten minutes or so tells me a lot. Time to diagnose it and not fix or
replace things until you find it. That gets expensive FAST.

I just took my '99 C230 in for a diagnostics check because I was having similar problems, though it was basically consistent. It turned out that it was a loose sensor on the recirculating flap for the supercharger, basically I was driving around without a functional supercharger for three months.

Luckily no damage was done to either the transmission or engine (phew!) despite sounding awful. A seven dollar fix + diagnostics fee and now my car is running very smoothly.

Oh, and my CEL was on, I think if it were something such as a loose electric problem the light would probably come on, but Im not sure, I know '99 cars in general are hypersensitive because of all the unnecessary govt. regulations they decided to play with that year. I'd go with mr. coyote's advice
