Default smart keys and eis??

OK new here but let me explain my problem maybe someone can point me in a decent direction. i am rebuilding a 2002 mercedes c230 i replaced the drivers aitr bag. i hooked battery - cable back up. then went to turn key on to check srs light and beeped once and would not turn key. no problems prior to this. both keys would not work after this. i also tried removeing new bag ang installing old one. i check the remote all doors unlock and lock. the infared will roll down windows, if i insert key with doors locked i here a solenoid pull in like a door unlocking. have the red led on shifter stereo works. but i can not start the car. are ther any other options besides replace the eis via dealer for nearly $800. i would really love to getrid of smart keys altogether.

First off the key is mechanical not to be a problem.
Second the remote entry and infrared are fob functions meaning the fob is most likely ok.
Third SRS is your air bag you can not just plug one in and be done the consol has to be reset for that air bag. this should not stop the starting of the vehicle. and must be reset by dealer,
Fourth you say you disconnected your battery then reconnected it There could be problems with that that you should try to investigate. additionaly you need to be more descriptive ex. manual shift if the clutch is not pushed down far enough you can turn the key but car wont start. automatic you need to make sure you are in parketc...

The key is not mechanical it is electromechanical from my research it uses the infared function to electrically pull off the lock cylinder allowing the mechanical section to take over.

i established the fobs where believed to be ok by my description not asking that question

what i want to know is there a way to completely eliminate the EIS and put a fully mechanical switch in its place. this is my first mercedes and I can honestly say I have NO desire to ever own another. i have gotten the keys working now and yes it was in park. the steering had jammed.
