Radio knob is losing contact

1999 C280, 95K miles. My radio knob is losing contact. Sometimes I have to hold it down for a good 5 seconds before the radio turns on. Also, when I turn the knob to adjust the volume, it skips or doesnt change at all. What can I do to fix the problem? Can you retigthen the knob? Thanks.
