I am unsure about the MB nav systems but from what I know of other cars, the DVD-based systems use DVDs because they can hold more data. This is relative to the entire system of course, because the newer systems have far more data to provide.

For example, lets say you have a CD-based system and it displays all the roads of the U.S. with street names, etc. A newer system would also have Points of Interest, all types of restaurants, shopping centers, and hundreds of other such POIs. Hence when a database is needed for this system, it would have a lot of info on it, in addition to your roads and highways, which would call for a higher storage capacity.

So as the navigation technology progressed, so did it's need for more resources. Higher resolution displays = better LCD screens. More functions = more processing power and a more complex system. More information = more storage, larger database on the backend. Hence, the natural transition from CD based info to DVD based info.

I foresee the next step in Navi-evolution bieng the direct jump to hardware storage (harddrives or flash medium).

 

I agree, can't turn back the clock, i have a lexus with nav. i'm sure it will be close to the prius one, hopefully the CD-based nav on the 04 C230 will be as good as a CD could give, i heard it has POI and detours so these features are covered , hopefully the user interface will be good (with no touch screen)

 

washoor, from what I have gathered from other people, our Toyota/Lexus nav system (and the interface combined with it) is probably the best out there at the moment. However, even with a CD based system, I am sure the BM will not lag behind too much, but you should not expect the same amount and complexity of features as your lexus.

As far as the touch screen is concerned, it does make life tons easier, but all those fingerprints make me mad! hahaha, you can tell I am a neat-freak.

you will of course gain on something. once you sit down and start driving it, you will feel something with character.

that's only on the surface where they are looking at. inside, even if the satellites will shutdown, the MB navigation will still work using the internal: yaw rate sensor, steering angle sensor, speed sensor, and gyro compass sensor. if you travel on the tunnel under the sea, you will know the difference.

Nope, none yet unfortunately. I am still in my pre-purchase phase, although I do have my eye on a couple of C230's around my area. I suppose we shall see how it goes. I am hoping to seriously start looking by the end of January, if not sooner.
