Default P0418 "Secondary Air" MIL Code, C230

2007 C230

Recently the LF parking light would not extinguish short of disconnecting the battery, so I changed the SAM unit. That problem disappeared, BUT

Now I have a MIL "Check Engine Light" and a P0418, "Secondary Air Injection System Relay A Circuit Malfunction" that was NOT present before.

The local dealer wants to replace the Air Injection Pump and the Air Control Solenoid (for $1700 +/-).

Since the problem did not exist prior to the SAM replacement I lean toward that as the cause, especially because the replacement SAM is a different Part # than the original. They swore that the original SAM was the WRONG part, and the replacement is the correct one, though doing a Google search shows BOTH listed for this car (depends upon the site which is listed).

Original SAM: MB Part A 2095452801
Replacement SAM MB A 2039060005

1) Which SAM is the correct one, and could using the A2039060005 be the problem?

The dealer says the actual RELAY in the SAM is internal and cannot be individually tested or replaced, and since I installed the new SAM myself, it cannot be returned (electrical part).

2) Does anyone KNOW where the Air Injection Pump Relay is LOCATED in the SAM (there are a bunch of such relays, of course on the SAM), and is it replaceable?

3) Finally, does the SAM have to be "Re-Flashed" by an external computer to
"match" the car in which it is installed? The dealer is saying I may have destroyed the SAM by not doing this when I installed it, so they would also like to replace it for an additional $600 or so (I paid $263 for the brand new unit just a week ago, of course).

If so, can ONLY the dealer "Re-Flash" it? A tech friend has a "Launch X431 GDS" high-end diagnostic tool he uses to do this with other components, but he has no data on re-flashing SAMs.

Thanks,
Bob
