P0170 and P0173 faults
All,
As a posted before, my 2001 C240 gave me these 2 codes when I got it checked. It has 56,000 miles and she is runing perfect exept the CEL that is on. I did few hours of research and found out that about most of the time is going to be the MAF. It could also be the O2 sensors, vacum leaks and the fuel regulator. My question is: How can you tell if is the MAF, O2 sensors or fuel? Is there any way to find out the exact problem? I'm planning to fix it myself if possible and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi chanto,
Yes those fault codes are "more than likely" caused by Mass Airflow Sensor.
Follow this link for instructions on how to clean yours.
Instead of the Simple Green, I use Radio Shack's "Precision Electronics Cleaner" (not to be confused with their contact cleaner) which works great.

Hope this helps!

chanto ill be real honest with you cleaning your mass will not fix the problem replace it. you will no fix anything by cleaning it. you will have the same problem that you have always had. check for vacuum leaks if there are no leaks replaced the mass

Hi vytamenc,
The main thing is you want to do what's the least expensive first.
I've been able to get a lot more service out of SEVERAL and I do mean SEVERAL Mass Airflow Sensors in the past by just cleaning them. In fact there's a few that are still going strong since the cleaning which was more than 2 years ago.
It all depends upon what contaminated it in the first place.
A MAF Sensor is not a cheap part, so try to clean it first, if it works AWESOME, if it doesn't then hey you certainly didn't waste anything and you have to buy one anyway.
But then again if money isn't an issue ....... go ahead and replace it ! LOL
Have a good one !
only my .02 cents worth .... just hope it helps someone someday
