Smartkey not being very smart...
I have a 2000 C280. Last night, I went to start the car and... nothing. The key will not "unlock" the steering wheel (or synchronize it... or whatever that 'click' sound is when you insert the key). The unlock/lock/trunk/panic buttons all work on the key, but I cannot turn the key in the ignition and therefore cannot start the car. I am parked on a level surface with the wheels straight. The steering wheel can turn about 2 inches to either side, but that has not helped. I tried pumping the brakes (which I read in some other forum) but to no avail.
I called the MB dealer and he said to try attaching jumper cables to the car. He said my car battery might be almost dead. Even though the lights/power doors work, he said the ignition system requires higher voltage. I will try that when I get home tonight.
Anyone have any other suggestions?? Did this ever happen to you?? The MB dealer said that worst-case scenario, I'd have to tow it in to them and have the ignition system drilled out and replaced. Grrrreeeaaaaaat.
Any info or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
