Default Newbie. Smart Key Question

My wife and I recently purchased an 05 C230. The car only came with one key. What is the process for getting a new key made for the car? Is this something that can only be done at the dealer by providing a vin number or can another existing key be re-programed for the car? I see a lot of keys for sale on Ebay but don't know if they are able to be programed. Thanks.

You can never purchase a key from ebay! All keys must be ordered by VIN and cannot be changed or programmed in any way. I priced one out for my c-class yesterday and it was $96 for the new chrome looking smatkey with blade. That is cost + 10% (employee price). Get it from the dealer and they will order correct key track and warranty it. Insert new key into ignition and it should only take 5-10 sec to program (red light on side will illuminate during learn-in process and go out when complete). I have had keys take up to 24 hrs to program though (less than 1%)
