My wife's 99 C230K has a weird rattling noise that sounds like it comes from the top of the engine at idle and when the car is in first gear. The car has 89K miles on it and it'shad no otherengine issues other than replacing the MAF and harnessunder warrantyat 40K miles. No check engine lights have flashed. Could it be bad valves or a timing chain issue?

Has anyone else experienced this?

I had a terrible rattling from my engine, although my car is only a 1998 C180 Elegance;
My rattling turned out to be the water pump, & cost me £190 to have a new one supplied & fitted at my local garage; I don't know what Mercedes main dealers would charge though.
Just a thought, you might have the same problem, but is on the front of the engine, above & to left of the air-con pulley.
