low miles - service A necessary?

I've had my C-230 for 11 months now, and have 5,600 miles on it. I know its not a lot, but I don't drive it in winter time. Recently the Service A indicator light has come on reminding me to take the car in for service A. Shouldn't the service be done relative to how many miles I have on the car (12K), rather than how many months? I feel like it would be a waste to take the car in for its Service A so early with so little miles. Any thoughts?
Does anyone know exactly what all is done at Service A, and do I have to have the dealer do this?

My C240 has a sensor to test the engine oil and suggest maintenance as necessary, based not only on the miles, but on characteristics like oil purity and loss of viscosity over time. I think your car has the same "Flexible Maintenance System". Given that you don't drive it during winter, I would definitely get that service to get fresh oil that would have all its lubrication characteristics still intact. These engines have very strict requirements. Mine requires synthetic oil for example. A trip to the dealership would also give you a free check on any recalls that may be outstanding for your vehicle which could be worth it. Not doing the service as recommended would invalidate the remaining warranty.

If your car is young (I'm assuming with so few miles), then I can't imagine it not having a warranty.
If so, why not get ServiceA done? Oil changing isn't the only thing they do you know. Mine changes oil, filter, cursory check of all systems, rotate tires, clean and vacuum it.

The FSS is set to 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first
Dealers will perform the maintenance free of charge, if qualified.
What (model) year is your car?
If its 2004 or older, bring it in to the dealer, it won't cost you a penny.
But if it is a 2005 model, then only the first sevice (between the first 1,000 and 3,000 miles) is free. 2004 was the last year Mercedes offered free scheduled maintenance.
