KNN air filter
Hello all, back with another question. I have a 1999 C280 sport and I was wondering if anyone would suggest using a K&N air filter? Good idea / Bad Idea??? My car goes out of the dealer extended warranty in April so I would only do it AFTER the warranty is up. So do you have to say about it? Should I expect to get more power? I have heard they give a little more UMPH!

FWIW, there is a guy over at club202 who dyno'd his car before and after installing a K&N. He actually lost 1 hp! That coupled with the increased possibility of contaminating the $$$ MAF doesn't seem worth the effort.

RE: KNN air filter
There are two clear schools of thought regarding K&N air filters and the arguments for both occur in most of the car forums and discussion groups. I have been listening to these opinions for years and have used K&N for many years myself in all of my cars, mostly hot rods and stuff I built myself. You will not realize a huge horsepower gain but may or may not see a slight gain on a dyno. It depends on the car and a lot of other factors. I like them because I don't ever need to buy another paper type filter for my cars. Also, I can clean them as I please, although they don't really "need" cleaning very often. It's been said they work better dirty. Others say cleaning them is a pain and they don't want to be bothered. So, as you can see, there are two sides to every story. Do they give you a ton of horsepower? Again, no. Do they flow more air than a paper filter? Probably yes. More than a dirty paper filter? Definitely yes. So you choose.

RE: KNN air filter
Do it now; Installing a K&N does not invalidate your Warranty.
You will save countless $$$$ and Deutschmarks by switching to
a permanent Filter/K&N. No more hunting for filters, paying for shipping/handling. Just the convenience and air flow gain makes it worth the $$ many times over.
