C350 automatic, 2006, 4 door, rear passenger door lock stem has come off - can't open door from outside - once opened from inside can't shut it! Auto lock feature isn't working on this door.

Remove the door panel and repair the door lock.
While the lock rod is under the door cover it's partially closed position won't allow the outer door handle to release the door lock and open the door.

 

Ok, now help me with this new complication - I opened door from inside now it won't shut! It appears that the latch mechanism is stuck in the closed position even if the door isn't. It has moved too far "foward" and is caught inthis position. Surely there is some way to "trip" this latch back into position so I can shut this door. My baby is undrivable at this point - I have never taken the door panel off but with some instruction I am pretty sure I can do this - any ideas or diagrams?
