The Mercedes Dealer in my area advised me to run the low grade fuel through my car during the winter. Apparently, there is an additive which gums up the engine. Has anyone else heard anything similar?

The octane number we see at fuel pumps in the U.S. are the average of Research Octane Number(RON) and Motor Octane Number, (RON + MON) / 2. But the rest of the worldgradesgasoline byRON only.

The number we see at the pump is also known asthe "Anti-Knock Index"; the number shows how well it prevents engine knocks. So it is never a good idea to downgrade what the manufacturer recommends.Although moderns vehicles are equipped with devices that are smart enough to "live with" whater its owners adds into the tank. But these devices were installed as "safety devices", not a device that help buyers to save money at the gas pump.

All gasolines sold in the U.S. are required by law, to have additives that cleans the fuel injectors, carbon build up..etc.. like 76's Pro Power, Chevron's Techron ...

For anyone with a supercharged, Kompressor, engine, Premium fuel is a must with an Octane Rating ((R+M)/2) of 91 or higher. The fuel is less likely to prematurely ignite under the higher compression levels. It's also a good idea to use premium fuel for better efficiency and a cleaner engine.
