Default (esp) electronic stability program

I have a 2001 c320 mercedes and the esp warning came on and the car died.
Started it back up and it ran for about three miles, it would hardly run.
I got it home but could not back it into the garage. Let it set then went out started it up and back it into the garage.
Look in the book and it said if esp warning message is displayed ,a malfunction has been detected in the systrm.only paetial engine output will be available.

Has anyone out there ever have this problem?
Thanks for any help!

This question could unleash a myriad of answers.
In my experience, ESP shuts off whenever the battery life is very low or the alternator is not charging the battery. However, you indicated you could still start the car so the ESP itself could be malfunctioning or a sensor has failed. Sorry I have no technical solutions.

yes i would susupect an alternator problem or bad battery. i suspect this because of the engine shutting off. this is not something that normally happens with an ESP light coming on, so the esp system is detecting a low voltage issue.
