Default Engine whine at 35+ mph

I just bought a 2006 Mercedes C230 with 9,000 miles on it. The engine has a whining sound starting at around 35 mph. Is this normal? I spoke to a Mercedes tech who said it was probably a pulley. I brought it intoa dealership to get it fixed it butthe problemis still there.

what is the rpm range for this problem? it really doesnt sound like an engine problem if it comes in at a certain mph range, because you may not always be at the same rpm at 35mph. more likely it is in a wheel, tranny output, or rear end. does the noise intensify as you continue to go faster? can you pinpoint where it is comin from other than in front of you?

I have had this problem since day 1 in my 2002 C200. But it is rpm based rather than speed. It appears at around 2000 rpm and disappears at either lower or higher rpm. The whining is there whether the car is in motion or stationary in P.
I made a complain to the dealer as well as the local DC hq. They all claimed that it is typical of theM111 engine and nothing can be done about it. I have got used to it since.
The car is locally assembled in Malaysia (should be UK spec, RH drive).
Shan.

yes, but the 2006 model uses an m171 and not an m111.

irvine, is this a kompressor car, and is the problem rpm related rather than mph? it may just be the normal noise out of the kompressor, or possibly a loose hose in the charge air system.
