eugene was right.

you will find the two slots and have to insert those special tools with the gap facing inwards.

ask from the store that sells tools, they might have it for it is known and easy to make.
ask for the tool "to pull the instrument cluster out"... they understand it better.

I am having the same problem. Have anyone tried screw driver and was successful in pulling the instrument cluster out?

I have a few questions:

1) What does "Rest" do?
2) What does "EC" do?
3) In my C280, I'm having the same problem. The heating/cooling unit look are exactly disame, but the other things are different. I also have the two slots below Auto and Circulation, so I'm guessing I should find those tools and repalce the bulb?

rest is heat restore. if you want to keep the inside of the car warm without the engine running, you can remove the key and press rest to get some warm air. it restores the engine heat.

ec means stop compressor or economy.

yes, you need the same tools.

Is there a Mercedes part number for the removal tools? Also, would the newer climate control unit like GTiSTiLE posted above work in a 1994 C280?
