Clicking noise in auto gearbox
l have a "clicking" noise coming from the gear shift area on C200K 2001 model. It sounds as if something is fouling the propshaft joint and is in pace with the speed of the car and not the engine. It gets slightly worse when warmed up. It has been run with the rear wheels jacked up and the noise still happens, it also happens when rolling in Neutral and with the engine switched off. I can feel the clicking on the gear shift. Also, the noise disappears when the car is steered to the left. Has anyone got an idea of what this could be?
My mechanic has found out what the noise was. The blue clip which holds the handbrake cable away from the prop shaft was broken and the cable was resting on the shaft. The clip is between the heat shield and the body. Remove heat shield to repair, a couple of cable ties have done the trick. The clicking noise was a ribbed label on the shaft.
Spot On. I read the thread and yes - the noise - an annoying click every time the prop shaft revolved was indeed the hand-brake cable having come away from its clips in the prop shaft well. Thanks for the heads up !!
